Abstract: The beginning of the Mwanza mission was marked by the arrival of two Jesuits in Tanzania’s Lake City on July 30, 1960, following an invitation from Bishop Joseph J. Blomjous, M.Af. (1908-92). The two Jesuits were Fathers William Picardo, S.J. (1900-85) and Matthew Lewis, S.J. (b.1918). In the following year, Matthew returned to India to serve as Socius in what was then the Vice Province of Karnataka. Aloysius was sent to replace Matthew in Mwanza, arriving there in February 1961.
