Today’s question is not “who is my neighbor” but “to whom am I a neighbor?” Our Gospel comes as a response to one of the scribes who asks Jesus: who is my neighbor? “The question is hostile, designed to “test Jesus.” It seeks to pit him over against the Law, to draw out from him a teaching suggesting that one can “inherit eternal life” while bypassing the Law.” Jesus will not have this for a moment. Instead, he gives a teaching about what it means to love one’s neighbor.en_US
