After the devastation of the First World War, a group of Quakers responded to the need of the impoverished people of Poland by distributing food and clothing. “As the story goes, one relief worker contracted typhus and died within twenty-four hours. There were no other cemeteries, except that of Roman Catholics, and canon law forbade burying anyone not of that confession in consecrated ground. So the deceased relief worker was buried in grave outside the fence of the cemetery. But during the night the villagers moved the fence of the cemetery to include the grave.”1en_US
