Abstract: | The icon of Our Lady of Vladimir (circa 1115) is one of oldest and most prized images of Our Lady and Child in the world. While earlier icons of Our Lady were severe and distant, the style became more sensitive and touched with emotion during the rule of the Comnenian family in the 1100’s. During that period, the cult of the icon extended widely throughout the Byzantine world.
