Abstract: The history of the Jesuits in the Eastern Africa Province began in Ethiopia, when St. Ignatius of Loyola sent the first missionaries. Most of the first attempts to start apostolates in Eastern Africa failed. In 1945, Emperor Haile Selassie welcomed Canadian Jesuits to Ethiopia with a view of them taking up the administration of the government schools....
