The existence of life in the universe is not by chance. It is a specific act and gift of God. Cosmological arguments for the existence of God seek to provide an answer to the question: "Why is there anything rather than not?" The 'why' part of the question remains forever important because, for Christians, it points to or directs the mind to ultimate cause of the existence of anything at all rather than not. The cause of existence is, as Thomas Aquinas puts it, what we call God. It is God's sole initiative to give life, to cause life, while God can neither be caused nor annihilated by anything.en_US
