Brother Canisius Chishiri, S.J., has since 1975 been involved in a lay-persons training program which was started by Archbishop Patrick F. Chakaipa of Harare. Its aim is to train more and more lay people to take part in the running of affairs in the parishes. Thus this involves moving around where the need is greatest in the various parishes of the Archdiocese. Brother Chishiri explains:en_US
Sometime in 1979 I was asked to move to Chitungwiza, 30 kilometers south of Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. Chitungwiza has almost half a million people, and has become the third largest town in the country. It was here that the International Red Cross built a refugee camp for about 18,000 people. Next to it was Chirambahuyo, a slum constructed by the people themselves, with another 18,000 people. This area was being served by three Carmelite Fathers when I was asked to move in and start training lay people.....en_US
