Abstract: The first Jesuits who came to Antananarivo in 1861, arrived after years of waiting and preparation. In 1871 Father Finaz reached Fianarantsoa, the capital of Betsileo, to the south of the centre of the island. Evangelization began at the heart of the region, which was the most thickly populated. Being few, the missionaries hardly penetrated the east or west of what is now the diocese of Fianarantsoa, for the people were scattered and access was difficult.....
