Abstract: On the evening of December 10, 1875, five Jesuit missionaries (Fathers Lavigne, Fabre, Jalbert and Berthieu) arrived at Tamatave on board the " Rance". Father Berthi:eu, who was to replace Father Gros on the He de Sainte-Ma,rie, for the first time set foot on the soil of Madagascar. He was 37 years old, and had -come to join the small group of missionaries from the Province of Toulouse to whom had been entrusted the evangelization of the principaI island and <those adjacent to it.
