dc.description.abstractFrom its very ongms, the Society of Jesus wanted to put itself at the service of Africa. Saint Ignatius himself sent out the first missionaries, first to the Congo (1547), then into Ethiopia (1556). His zeal for Africa was likewise shown in a letter he wrote to Saint Francis Xaviet to recall him to Europe (1553).
