Abstract: Ignatius clearly felt under very great obligations to John III of Portugal, a generous and devoted patron from the first year · of the Society (7540), an exemplary Christian, and the door to the far Eastern mission of Xavier and many others. He IS prepared to place the Jesuits under (limited) obedience to this layman. Of still greater interest are his readiness to give reasons, and the type of argument he uses to convince his men to accept positions that will in time lead to the enmity of Pombal and the suppression of the Society in the 18th cent.
